Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa gave their first concert on 8th May, 1922, at the Arriaga Theatre, under Armand Marsick’s baton.
Since it was founded, the principal conductors have been Armand Marsick, Vladimir Golschmann, Jesús Arámbarri, José Limantour, Antoine de Babier, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Alberto Bolet, Pedro Pirfano, Urbano Ruiz Laorden and Theo Alcántara. In July 1999, Juanjo Mena took up the principal conductorship and music direction of the Orchestra.
In July 2003 the BOS, under Juanjo Mena’s baton, was invited by Valery Gergiev to perform at the Mariinski Theatre in Saint Petersburg within the celebrations for the 300th Anniversary of the city. This concert was a landmark in the new international projection of the Orchestra, which is regularly invited to the festivals Les Folles Journées in Nantes and La Roque D'Antheron in Marseille.
In addition to its historic tours, the BOS has frequently performed at the National Auditorium in Madrid and the Musical Fortnight in Donostia, as well as at Santander International Festival, Paris Festival, the Religious Music Festival in Cuenca and Ibermusica’s cycle “World Orchestras”. In March 1998 it was invited to the concert for the investiture of the composers Carmelo Bernaola, Cristóbal Halffter and Luis de Pablo as Doctors Honoris Causa by Complutense University in Madrid, and performed works by the three maestros. In 1998 it represented the Basque Country at the World Expo in Lisbon, and in 1999 it took part in the inauguration of Palacio Euskalduna in Bilbao.
The list of conductors who have conducted the BOS includes historic names such as Enrique Fernández Arbós, Bartolomé Pérez Casas, Ataulfo Argenta, Hans Von Benda, Eduardo Toldrá, Sir Malcolm Sargent and Igor Markevitch as well as others such as Charles Dutoit, Ros Marbá, García Asensio, Jerzy Semkow, Josep Pons and Aldo Ceccato. It has also been an instrument in the hands of Maurice Ravel, Jesús Guridi, Pablo Sorozábal, Jesús Arambarri, Krzysztof Penderecki, Carmelo Bernaola, Luis de Pablo, Ernesto and Cristóbal Halffter and other composers performing their own works.
The BOS, throughout its long history, has shared the stage with some of the greatest soloists: José Iturbi, Arturo Rubinstein, Jacque Thibaud, Vladimir Horowitz, Fritz Kreisler, Joseph Szigeti, Henryk Szeryng, Vlado Perlemuter, Mstilav Rostropovich, Salvatore Accardo, Rugiero Ricci, Joaquín Achúcarro, Felix Ayo, Nicanor Zabaleta, Maurice André, Mischa Maisky, Uto Ughi, Narciso Yepes, Alicia de Larrocha, Boris Belkin, Ivo Pogorelich, Jean Pierre Rampal, Viktoria Mullova, Asier Polo, Truls Mork and Frank Peter Zimmermann, amongst many others. In the list of voices there are names such as Victoria de los Angeles, Montserrat Caballé, Alfredo Kraus, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, as well as the Choral Society of Bilbao, Orfeón Donostiarra and the Choir of the University of the Basque Country.
Noteworthy within its catalogue of records are the recordings of Arriaga’s works with Jesús López Cobos (1985) and the operas Mendi-Mendiyan by Usandizaga and Amaya as well as the zarzuela El Caserío, both by Guridi, for the record company Naxos. For this same company it has performed an interesting collection of Basque music with CDs dealing with Arambarri, Guridi, Arriaga, Isasi and Sarasate, under Juanjo Mena’s conductorship.
As well as its subscription season at Palacio Euskalduna, its natural extension to the towns of Bizkaia, its collaboration in ABAO operas, and its tours and outings, the Orchestra has been performing didactical concerts since 1985, an initiative in which it can be considered a pioneer. It also maintains collaboration lines with other cultural institutions such as the Arriaga Theatre and Guggenheim Bilbao Museum for the joint organisation of events.
The activity of the BOS is carried out thanks to the support of its numerous aficionados and the contributions of its Patrons: Provincial Council of Bizkaia and Bilbao City Council.
